The brief required the creation of a new single storey rear extension to 1950’s house that would accommodate new Kitchen, Dining and Living space.
The challenge was to configure the Extension in such a manner that ensures that the space formed between the old & new is usable and does not become wasted space as has happened historically. What was originally a very tight entrance hallway has been opened up into the former Garage to create a generous entrance hallway complete with a wheelchair accessible shower room to accommodate future changing needs of the occupants.
A new single storey Extension complete with a generous bank of south facing rooflights accommodates the new Living spaces and captures the sunlight and southerly orientation. An internal passageway provides access from the front to the rear of the house via a new Utility.
The external envelope of the existing house was upgraded to high insulation and airtightness standards in excess of current Building Standards.
